FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Will my child be safe and happy?
These are two of the first and foremost goals at Spring Hollow. Security and adult supervision are our first priorities. Just like the fence around our property, our rules for safety do not budge. The adult/child ratio is no more than six to one. Within our consistent frame, the child finds happiness in the freedom to make choices.
What is the difference between Spring Hollow and traditional schools?
Traditional schools have a pre-set program for their curriculum. Spring Hollow offers an "emergent curriculum" where students' input is encouraged and becomes an equal part of the curriculum. Parents are given many invitations to be involved in their child's life at Spring Hollow. Much of our curriculum is inspired by the renowned Italian Reggio Emilia Approach, nominated by Newsweek in 1989 as having one of the top ten schools in the world.
How does one child's interests become a learning experience for all?
Children collaboratively create and share ideas. Process is emphasized rather than the product. The process of creation is validated through documentation, then the documentation is revisited, discussed, and defined by the students, parents and teachers.
What is documentation?
Documentation includes visual and written images of the child's experiences. Children's talk and play are recorded and photographed and are visible on document windows and in books for all to study. These documents allow the adult and child to focus more clearly on their experiences.
What about discipline?
Our main rule is to act with love and respect for each other. Our students articulate and problem solve as they collaborate together in formal or informal settings. It is a rare occasion that a teacher must step in to help resolve conflict, because children at Spring Hollow learn excellent negotiation, problem solving, and leadership skills.
